How many opportunities throughout the day are provided to students to create something? In reading, there are opportunities for students to choose their reading. During writing, there may be opportunities for students to create their own original writing. But how often are students afforded the opportunity to create using a pile of materials?

It is something that I keep thinking about within the constraints of our educational system. We have gotten to a point where every minute is accounted for and aligned to standards. I know there are opportunities for creativity within the system.

What makes me sad is that our educational system is not built for creativity. We all have students who minds are rich with imagination and creativity which seems to diminish as time moves on through school.

Makerspaces offer much needed opportunities for creativity that are not present in a traditional classroom. It seems that most makerspaces are a separate environment from the classroom or an elective or special. What I am wondering about how to incorporate makerspace type activities within the regular classroom on a regular basis to fulfill the need for creativity.
